Biology at Malvern

Biology is a popular subject at Malvern. Whilst the factual basis of Biology is taught, it is done so by developing the pupils understanding. Practical and investigative exercises are used to support the development of pupils knowledge as they are made aware of the industrial, social and economic aspects of the Biology they are studying. An experienced and committed staff stimulate pupils’ interest in, and enjoyment of, Biology so that they feel encouraged to continue their studies in the subject. This extends to ensuring pupils are aware of career opportunities in biology and related subjects.

In the FY (Year 9), all pupils will study Biology. At the end of the FY (Year 9) pupils can choose between Science Double Award (Combined) or Biology as a separate subject. Biology is available as a Sixth Form subject at both A-level and the International Baccalaureate. Many field trips are organised by staff and enjoyed by pupils. The Biology department has five well-stocked laboratories and practical work forms a significant part in all of the courses taught. A large lecture/conference room is shared with the other sciences and used for lectures and occasions where large groups are addressed.
