Economics, Politics and Business Studies

Malvern has a long and proud tradition of teaching Economics and Politics. We were one of the first public schools to offer these subjects for study and we now offer Business Studies. Over 200 students are currently studying these subjects in the Sixth Form. In addition we teach A-level Economics, Business Studies and Politics and IB Higher and Standard Economics.

Virtually all of our pupils have no formal experience of these subjects before joining the department, although a good grade at GCSE Mathematics and an ability to interpret numerical data are important for the study of Economics. Students are expected to read widely and to keep up with current world events and good language skills are crucial for these rigorous academic disciplines.

More students go on to read Economics, Politics, Business or the Social Sciences than any other subject, including over 20 to Oxford and Cambridge in the last ten years (four successful applicants for 2010 entry). Students are frequently accepted on Economics courses at LSE, Bristol, Warwick, Durham and York and further afield. Former students have studied at Harvard, Penn State and the Warton Business School; we can even boast an Economics Nobel Prize Winner in James Meade as a former student.
