Malvern College Council
Lord MacLaurin - Chairman
Ian MacLaurin was educated at Malvern College and started his career at Tesco in 1959 progressing to Managing Director, Deputy Chairman and then Chairman in a career spanning nearly forty years. In 1997, Ian became a Board Member of Vodafone and from 2000-2006 he was Chairman of the telecommunications giant. He has also been Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (1996-2002), Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire (1996-2005) and he is currently Chairman of Chartwell plc and a non-executive Director of Heineken and the City Bank, Evolution plc. He is a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County of Wiltshire and has been Chairman of the College Council since 2002.
Mrs Caroline Campbell
Vice Chairman, Caroline Campbell, practising under the name of Caroline Harry Thomas QC, was educated at Ellerslie Girls' School (which merged with Malvern College in 1992). Caroline studied law at Exeter University and was called to the Bar in 1981. She was appointed Recorder in 2003 and in 2008 was appointed Queen's Counsel. Caroline specialises in Medical Law and Medical Ethics.
Robin Black
Robin Black, an Old Malvernian, is the College Council's Treasurer. Having gained a politics degree at Exeter University he qualified as an accountant with KPMG. Robin is the Managing Partner of a London based venture capital company and a non-executive Director of several other companies.
Dr Nick Bampos
Nick Bampos, Senior Tutor at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Staff Fellow, Director of Studies in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) and Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge was appointed to the College Council in 2006 as the nominee of the Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University. In addition to his research and teaching duties he also a member of the University Council, the General Board and various committees at the University of Cambridge.
Simon Bennett
Currently Consultant and Senior Editor to the Independent Schools Inspectorate, Co-ordinating inspector of the School Inspection Service, Advisory Member of the Boarding Schools Association National Executive. Until retirement in 2005, Simon was one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools with particular responsibility for boarding and UK Inspector for EU schools with oversight of the European Baccalaureate and UK representative of the Board of Secondary Inspectors in Brussels. Appointed to the College Council in 2005, Simon has oversight of Safeguarding and Child Protection issues.
Peter Brough
A successful businessman and a former parent, Peter has been a member of Council since 1995 and was Chairman of the 2001 Fundraising Appeal Committee.
William Burke III
William "Chip" Burke, an Old Malvernian, graduated with a BA from Kenyon and an MBA from Dartmouth. A US citizen and Chief Operating Officer of La Branche & Co in New York, Chip also serves on the finance committees of the Church of St Ignatius Loyola and the Buttonwood Foundation on Wall Street. Chip is a member of the Council's Fundraising Campaign Board with responsibility for furthering US OM links with the College.
Peter Cartwright
Peter Cartwright, an Old Malvernian and former parent, farmed in Sussex before moving to work as a Director of Rankin Bros & Sons, Cork Merchants in London and Lisbon until his retirement in 2004. Peter has been a member of Council since 2003 and is also a member of the Malvernian Society Committee, holding the post of Society Chairman from 2002-2006.
Professor Ken Davey OBE
Ken Davey spent several years in East Africa as a member of the Overseas Civil Service. Later he became Professor and Head of the School of Public Policy at the University of Birmingham. Since 1990, he has specialised in public administration and finance reform in Eastern Europe. The father of two Old Malvernians, Ken has been a member of the College Council since 1986 and was Vice Chairman of Council from 1994 -2006. He holds the Officer's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit.
Rosalie Dawes JP
Rosalie Dawes was a member of the Malvern College Prep School Management Committee from 1990, holding the post of Chairman from 2001-2007. Elected to Council in 1993, Rosalie was a member of the Council's Management Board from 2003 until 2010. A Justice of the Peace for over 26 years and a retired member of the Board of Visitors at Gloucester Prison, Rosalie is also a Governor of The Downs, Malvern College Prep School and has held previous governorships at Evendine School and The Rhydd Special School.
Michéle Edwards-Clark MVO
An Old Girl of Ellerslie Girls' School, Michéle began her working life with Oxford University Appointments Committee before moving to work in the City for many years. Currently she works in The Queen's Private Secretary's Office at Buckingham Palace. Michéle has been a member of the College Council since 1992.
Felix Francis
Felix is a bestselling author and the father of two Old Malvernians. He graduated from London University in 1974 and taught A level physics for seventeen years. He was Head of Science at Bloxham School and Area Secretary for Science for the Independent Schools Joint Council when he left teaching in 1991 to act as business manager for his father, the author Dick Francis. From 1993 - 2005 he was a director and deputy chairman of World Challenge Expeditions Ltd. He is a former governor of Winchester House Prep School and, for the past five years, has been co-authoring the Dick Francis novels. Felix was appointed to the College Council in 2005.
Michael Green
Old Malvernian, Michael Green, has had an extensive retail, leisure and financial services career with experience at Heathrow Airport, Hanson plc, Prét a Manger and was the European founder of Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream. Past directorships include Haagen-Dazs, Wilsons Sporting Goods, American Golf, Capital One Home Loans and Paystream. Michael joined the College Council in March 2009.
Louise Gullifer
Appointed to Council in 2002 as the Oxford University nominee, Louise is Reader in Commercial Law at Oxford University and is a tutor and fellow in law at Harris Manchester College. She previously practised at the Commercial Bar and is a member of 3 Verulam Buildings in Chambers at Gray’s Inn Place. Louise is Chairman of the College's Education Committee and Education Working Group.
Jo Hampson
Elected to Council in 2002, Jo had previously been on the Board of Governors of a
large junior school in London and also Bracknell College, Berkshire. Jo is an Ellerslie Old Girl, who initially worked as a teacher in the 1980s before joining the Metropolitan Police accelerated promotion scheme where she rose to the position of Area Commander with the Thames Valley Police. Jo left the Police in 2001 to run her own business. She now runs her own training company working with both private and corporate clients. In addition she coordinates a business mentoring programme for the north west and in her spare time she works as a motivational speaker.
Jeremy Havard
Jeremy Havard, an OM, has over 30 years experience in the City of London. Following 10 years with Insurance Brokers he left Jardine in 1987 and established an insurance practice for an Executive Search consultancy, subsequently starting his own practice in that field. He was later European Insurance Partner with a publicly quoted US Search firm before returning to his own business in the City. He has extensive experience of organizational development and psychology, team building and leadership and has worked with clients throughout Europe and the Far East recruiting senior executives for insurance businesses. He served for seven years in the Territorial Army and is also a trustee of three other Charities with educational objects. He was elected to the Council in 2008 and is a member of the Council's Fundraising Campaign Board. He is a Sidesman at the church of St Michael, Cornhill.
Syd Hill
Syd Hill joined the College Council and Management Board in 2007 and, upon his retirement in 2008 as Headmaster of Elstree Preparatory School, was appointed Secretary of the Malvernian Society. Syd joined Malvern College as a teacher of Geography and Master in Charge of Football in 1980 and from 1986-1995, was Housemaster of No.1 Malvern College. Syd is also a Governor of The Downs, Malvern College Prep School and Dean Close School. He is the Hon. Treasurer of the Independent Schools Football Association.
Gill Hylson-Smith
Gill Hylson-Smith has taught in both state and independent schools and was latterly Head of Westonbirt School for Girls in Gloucestershire. Now retired, Gill is governor of three schools and on numerous other committees linked with education including the College’s Education Working Group.
Graham Jones
Graham Jones was Headmaster of Repton School until his retirement in 2003 and has been on the College Council since 2005. He is also a governor at Birkenhead School, has acted in an advisory capacity to other governing bodies, and is a member of the College's Management Board and Education Working Group
Rear Admiral Simon Lister OBE
Simon Lister was appointed to the College Council as the Admiralty Board's nominee in 2005. The father of three Old Malvernians who have all been through the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools, Simon is a submariner, nuclear and marine engineer, linguist and procurement specialist who has held posts as the Naval Attaché in Moscow, Commander of Devonport Naval Base and is currently Director Submarines in the Ministry of Defence. Simon is a member of the College's Audit Committee.
Ken Madden
Ken is a parent of two Old Malvernians. Following retirement from a teaching career which included the Headship of three Prep Schools he trained for ordained ministry in the Church of England and is currently combining the position of curate in the Newent benefice with a part time teaching post at Beaudesert Park Preparatory School. Ken was appointed to Council in 2007 and also serves on the governing body of The Downs, Malvern College Preparatory School.
Major General Bill Moore CBE
Educated at Ipswich School and Salford University where he read Politics and Industrial History, Bill Moore joined the Army on graduation. He has spent much of his career in Airborne Forces eventually commanding 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. Commands in Sierra Leone and Iraq have followed and he finished his most recent tour in Iraq in July 2009 as a Deputy Commanding General with the US forces in Baghdad. He is now the Director of Battlespace Manoeuvre and Master of the Ordnance in the MOD, and is a member of the Army Board with responsibility for the Army's equipment. He both coaches and plays cricket, raised £173,000 for Services charities in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe race in 2008,and regularly takes part in the Original Mountain Marathon. Elected to Council in 2004 as a parent governor.
Doug Robertson
A former parent, Doug is a Chartered Accountant and Group Finance Director of Umeco plc. He is also Chairman of the College's Audit Committee, a Governor of The Downs Malvern College Preparatory School and Chairman of their Finance and Development Committee.
Joe Roseman
An Old Malvernian and current parent, Joe graduated from Manchester University and worked in the City as an Economist becoming partner and Head of Economics at Moore Capital Management. In 2006, Joe left Moore Capital and started up his own fund management company. Joe was a Malvernian Society Committee member from 2002-2009 and was appointed to Council in 2003 and the Management Board in 2007.
Adrian Silcock
Adrian joined the College Council in September 2008 following the successful merger of The Downs School, Colwall with Malvern College Preparatory School. He read Modern Languages at Oxford University and after a career teaching in schools in the UK and Germany was Headmaster of The King's School, Macclesfield for 13 years. In retirement, he is Chairman of the board of the Prep School and a Governor at Hereford Cathedral School.
Dr Christoph Stoecker
Christoph Stoecker is a German national, an Old Malvernian and parent of an Old Malvernian. Having studied law in Cologne, Lausanne, Hamburg and Sydney, Christoph gained a Doctorate and Law degree from the University of Hamburg and a Master of Laws from Sydney University. After being admitted to the Bar in 1988 he worked for several international law firms in Germany, UK and Australia to become a partner at Buse Heberer Fromm in Hamburg in 1992 where he specialised in corporate law and M&A. In 2000 he also became Partner of M&A advisers, MCF Corporate Finance with offices in Hamburg, London and Helsinki, whilst continuing to practice corporate law. Christoph joined the Council in 2005 as its first overseas member.
Julia Thompstone
Successful businesswoman, property developer and mother of two Old Malvernians, Julia joined the College Council in 2003 having previously served on the Malvern College Prep School Management Committee. Julia was a member of the College's Management Board from 2004 until 2010.
Richard Wilson
An Old Malvernian, Richard qualified as a solicitor in 1973, became a partner with Constant & Constant in 1978, Senior Partner in 2003 and then following the company's merger in 2007 with TLT Solicitors of Bristol became London Senior Partner. Richard is also a member of The Baltic Exchange, a member of Maritime London and member of The American Bureau of Shipping. Richard has been a Malvernian Society Committee member since 1976 and Society Chairman since 2006.
