Inter House Cross Country, round 4: The Beacon
17 November 2008
It\'s beginning to get serious now. We even have a new record for the course. This week forty-three runners hauled themselves up to the the highest point on the Malvern Hills for the good of their Houses and their blood-circulation. A wonderful turnout this week, and forty-two of them managed to complete the whole course. No.1 did what we call a \'One-er\'. From time to time this House persuades a vast number of its residents to don shorts and turn out in force. And they did. They fielded twice as many runners as any other team could manage, and while the first four \'counters\' earned good positions, others served to keep other Houses further back and reduce the score of rivals. And King of the race today was Ed Davenhill (1) who shot round the course in a time of 24.08 (Record 20.16, Hartman, 1985). The other No.1 counters were Harry Siviter (third in the race today), Petr Tikilyaynen, and Dominic Stanley. The second individual finisher today was Alexander Betteridge (5). No.5 finished second in this round, and No.7 third.
But, talking of records, it is Ros Harvey (6) who has managed to make redundant the list of record times that I have only this very week uploaded into Pupil Groups. The previous best girls\' time was 32.04 by Fiege (4) in 2003. Ros stormed round, leaving most of the boys behind her, in 27.11. A wonderful performance. So Ros is the Queen, but No.8 were the winning House this week, with the team of Imogen Bexfield (second in the girls\' race), Steph Ong (third), Maria Schacker, and Anna Kuntz.
So, after four rounds of the League, No.8 remain in the lead for the girls, with No.6 in second place. For the boys No.1 with today\'s win, are now up in third position, with No.7 second and No.5 first.
My thanks to helpers Patricia O\'Dwyer (6), Ghabriela Cruz Amorim (6), Dr. Watson, Mr. Jackson (RAJ) and Mr. Cramp. All did a wonderful job today.
